“Metabolically activated macrophages in obesity-associated breast cancer”

Awarded a $75,000 Young Investigator Award.Lev Becker PhD

Emerging data suggest that obesity is strongly linked to the severity of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC); thus, obesity must be taken into account in understanding and treating patients with TNBC. This application will test a novel mechanism to explain how obesity increases the severity of breast cancer. Investigators propose that breast adipose tissue releases fat, which causes a specific immune cell type, called macrophages, to change from fighting cancer to promoting cancer. Understanding this mechanism through the studies proposed here should assist in developing better therapeutics aimed at treating obesity-associated breast cancer.
