Summer 2001 Newsletter:
The University of Chicago Gary Comer, founder of Lands' End Inc., and his wife, Frances, have donated $21 million toward the cost of building a new children's hospital at the University of Chicago. The new patient rooms will be designed with the needs of the young patients and their families as a primary consideration: Each new room will be larger, have more windows and personal bulletin boards, large TVs, internet-connected computers, adjustable shower-controls and room temperature controls. The patients will be allowed to wear hospital scrubs instead of embarrassing gowns, and they can select their own bed linens. In the commonly shared areas, there will be personal kitchens and a food court. Comer Children's
Hospital will provide the best possible setting for superb patient care,
pediatric research and training. Construction will begin this fall, and
should be completed in 2004.
